Data source & methodology

Peak periods are derived from the official holiday calendar (JPM BKPP gazette via the mycal API, mirrored into slow.json) and the KPM school calendar. The dates themselves are never guessed: a weekly collector sends only the upcoming holidays and school breaks to Gemini, which writes the plain-language outlook and tips; if the model is unavailable a deterministic fallback from the same calendar is served instead, so the card always renders.

Warnings & Hazards

Data source & methodology

Six feeds in one view. MET publishes severe-weather warnings and a global earthquake list, and USGS publishes a worldwide M2.5+ feed; earthquakes from both are filtered to within 500 km of Malaysia and to the last 24 hours. Both sources are needed: MET's list stopped updating (on 15 Aug 2026 its newest event was six days old and it was missing that morning's M6.9 in North Sumatra, 268 km from the Perak coast), while USGS is live within minutes but has no notion of distance-to-Malaysia, which is computed here against a list of coastal anchors. Duplicates - the same rupture reported by both - are collapsed, MET's row winning because it carries the local bearing. The window is 24 hours, the same promise the rest of this section makes: if nothing has happened, the section says so rather than keeping an older event on screen. Measured against USGS over the year to 17 Aug 2026, 88 events fall inside 500 km on 76 separate days, so that window has something to show roughly one day in five. Warnings and earthquakes share one card carousel - filterable by weather, earthquakes, your area or marine - with flood-risk stations riding in the same deck under All Malaysia. Flood risk is JPS gauge telemetry, counting only stations that reported within 24 hours, and keeps its own tile because it mounts a map. The latest Rapid KL service alert (myrapid.com.my PULSE, behind Incapsula, fetched through the r.jina.ai reader) rides in the deck as one card, newest post only. Air quality is Open-Meteo's hourly model (free, open, keyless - the official APIMS feed blocks non-browser clients) polled for 18 major cities: every city always shows as a comparison card in its own tile, and the deck only gains an alert card when the worst city is Unhealthy (US AQI 101+).

Weather

Data source & methodology

Live conditions come from Open-Meteo (free, open data, no key) at the selected location's coordinates, with the map pinning that location; when it is unreachable the card falls back to MET's day-0 forecast, honestly labelled. The seven-day outlook comes from MET Malaysia, covering 360 locations from states down to individual towns and highland resorts. Warnings and earthquakes moved to the Warnings & Hazards section above.

Household

What a household pays - weekly retail fuel prices, the PriceCatcher groceries basket, and how Malaysian household income has grown over time.

Data source & methodology

Fuel prices are set weekly by the Ministry of Finance and take effect every Thursday; they are fetched server-side-filtered to the price level series. Groceries are a fixed basket of everyday items priced daily by KPDN enumerators - the Groceries block below carries the full methodology. Household income comes from the Household Income Survey.

Groceries

What food actually costs on the shelf - a fixed basket of everyday items priced daily by KPDN enumerators at supermarkets, mini markets and wet markets in every district.

Data source & methodology

PriceCatcher records the shelf price of ~340 items at ~2,100 premises nationwide. It is not on the OpenAPI (id=pricecatcher returns 404) - it is published only as monthly Parquet, so a daily GitHub Action aggregates 13 months of it into prices.json. The trend is a Jevons index (geometric mean of price relatives) over items priced in every month, so the basket cannot drift. It is equal-weighted, not CPI: DOSM publishes no per-item expenditure weights at this granularity. The district figure is a spatial price level - each item's local median over its national median - so a district is not penalised for stocking a different slice of the basket.

People

Who lives in Malaysia and how they are doing - DOSM population estimates from 1970 to now, broken down by state, district and constituency with per-seat income, poverty, inequality and unemployment, plus the Health block below on blood donations, organ pledges and PeKa B40 screenings.

Data source & methodology

DOSM's annual population estimates, published to 1 January each year in thousands of people. The national series comes over OpenDOSM; state, district and constituency estimates are Parquet-only on DOSM's storage host and arrive through geo.json, which a weekly GitHub Action regenerates. The constituency tables carry no age bands, so the citizen count is a proxy for an electorate, not a voting-age population. Income, poverty, inequality and labour-force figures per seat come from the Household Income Survey and Labour Force Survey through the OpenAPI.

Results are crawled from the Election Commission's official MySPRSemak lookup (mysprsemak.spr.gov.my) - its own JSON API behind the constituency search. The collector keeps only the latest election per category (parliamentary, state assembly, by-election) since published results never change; it runs manually after each new election. Parliamentary and state seats shown by party colour; the winner carries a check.

Data source & methodology

Tourism Malaysia publishes a monthly top-51 arrivals table as a PDF on data.tourism.gov.my. The files are public - no login - and a monthly GitHub Action extracts the table with pymupdf into tourism.json. Growth columns compare against the same month in 2025 and 2019 (pre-pandemic). Hotel data comes from the quarterly Paid Accommodation Survey infographic (occupancy rate, room rate and guests for all 16 states, current quarter vs a year earlier), extracted by a quarterly collector into hotel.json. Data provided by Tourism Malaysia.

Finance

Exchange rates and interest rates from Bank Negara Malaysia, plus the pulse of online payments from PayNet - the daily FPX totals and monthly value by payment instrument.

Data source & methodology

Exchange rates are Bank Negara's reference rates, published four times a trading day (09:00, 11:30, 12:00 and 17:00 MYT). The headline number is the newest published middle reference; the daily chart plots the 12:00 mid-day series; the monthly view is the published monthly average. The 11:30 best-counter rates carry no official midpoint and are not charted. Interest rates cover commercial and investment banks; the OPR itself isn't published in this catalogue, so the chart shows the commercial base rate, which tracks it. FPX figures are PayNet's daily transaction value and volume; payment instruments are the monthly value and count split by debit, credit, charge, cheque and e-money.

Registrations are counted by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) at first registration and published monthly by fuel type; only all-vehicle totals are charted here. Ridership is KTMB's own daily passenger count per service, published to the previous day.

Public Transport

Scheduled bus and train routes for KTMB, Rapid KL and Rapid Penang - the busiest lines, how many stops and trips each network runs, and how many trips people actually take every day.

Data source & methodology

Schedules come from GTFS-static feeds published by each operator. They arrive as ZIP archives and are parsed in your browser - only routes, trips, stops and the calendar are read, never the largest file. Trip counts are departures on one ordinary weekday. Every feed ships its weekday, Saturday and Sunday patterns together, so counting the file's rows would add separate days into a total nobody can travel on; both Rapid KL feeds are also frequency-based, listing one template per direction plus a headway, so the Kelana Jaya line appears in the file as 6 trips rather than the ~350 it runs. Penang's bus feed is the opposite - a plain row per trip, so its count reads directly. Daily ridership by service comes from the government data catalogue's ridership_headline series - anonymous tap-in/out totals from the operators' ticketing systems, published by Prasarana and the Ministry of Transport. It counts journeys taken, not unique passengers, and is audited monthly before release.

Live Vehicles

Trains and buses currently reporting their position, straight from the operators' live feeds.

Data source & methodology

Trains come from KTM's GTFS-realtime feed, decoded in your browser by a small wire-format reader; it is intermittently empty even mid-service, which is why buses use a different source. Buses come from Prasarana's official live kiosk feed - the same data the myrapidbus site shows - for both the Klang Valley (800+ buses) and Penang (200+). The section opens on the Klang Valley feed, with KTMB trains and Rapid Penang one chip away (or All for the full board). Route codes in the live feeds are matched against the operators' published schedules to name each route and its endpoints; the Klang Valley matches on route id, Penang on route number. A vehicle whose last reported position is over 15 minutes old is left off the map and the counts, and noted underneath. Buses are aggregated into route chips and the map clusters positions until you zoom in.
